How to Pass a Hair Follicle Drug Test

What Is a Hair Drug Test?

Hair follicle drug tests involve a small quantity of hair being removed from the head and on some occasions, other parts of the body before being analyzed to check whether any drugs are present in the sample.  This type of test has a detection window of around 3 months.  The reason that hair drug tests are used is because of their longer detection period compared with urine, saliva, or blood tests.  Saliva tests have a detection window of just 24 to 72 hours.  Urine and blood tests have detection time frames that are in between while the longest is offered by a hair follicle test.  However, hair drug tests cannot pick up on any drug use that has occurred only in the hours leading up to the test.  A hair follicle test may be necessary before starting a job in which it is vital that employees are never taking drugs.  Such jobs include truck driving as well as agencies such as the FBI and police.  According to The Journal of law and technology (University of Richmond School of Law), the use of hair drug tests has become more commonplace in the legal industry, especially when court-ordered drug tests may be necessary.  Examples of cases in which hair drug tests could be used for legal reasons include divorce, probation, and legal cases surrounding child custody.

In terms of workplace testing, the Department of Health and Human Services-certified labs are required to report to the MRO, the quantitative values of all drug test results relating to the Department of Transport. This is according to the White Paper of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).  Quantitative values may also be required in certain collective bargaining scenarios and by some courts; judges and lawyers sometimes want them.  Various types of drugs are tested for when it comes to a hair follicle test including stimulants such as methamphetamine, hallucinogens such as cocaine, ecstasy, PCP, weed, opioids like oxycontin and benzodiazepines such as Xanax.  In some cases, designer drugs including Spice are also tested for.

Roughly, for every one and a half an inch of hair, 90 days are covered.  In theory, hair follicle tests could go back even further for people with long hair.  Should you, therefore, cut your hair?   You’d think that the older the hair, the less the density of drug residues should be as some will have detoxed naturally with time.  However, the longer your hair, the longer the history of drug use you’re going to keep.  Where precisely do they extract the hair from? Near the scalp or from the ends?  Right, it’s near the scalp.  We will examine this answer as we delve into our research on these issues with you. It’s important to note that detoxing in an effort to beat a drug test is illegal in some U.S. states.  So be sure to check what the law says regarding detoxes before a test in your region.

How do Hair Drug Tests work?

Let’s now take a look at how hair drug tests work.  First, an inch and a half of hair are taken from the closest point to the roots possible while still obtaining the hair sample size necessary.  With hair growing half an inch per month, this means that the sample will cover the previous three months.  The testers will then look for the metabolites or chemical signatures of drugs in the sample.  Since drug metabolites stick to melanin, a person with darker hair will likely maintain drug metabolites in their hair for longer than someone with lighter hair.

Testing Process

Once your hair sample is extracted, the testers may have your hair washed and it could be checked for environmental contamination.  Washing may reduce the chance of false positives.  Blood-borne molecules are the reason for drug metabolites making its way to your hair hence why ordinary shampoo won’t remove drug residues entirely.  Although, detox shampoos do exist which we will talk more about later.  Your hair follicles will next be dissolved into solvents.  Testers will analyze the liquid which results from this soaking using specific testing procedures.  Most labs use two tests to maximize accuracy.

The first of these tests is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test.  An ELISA test looks at how antibodies interact with any substances present in the sample.  The initial positive or negative result is received from this test within 24 hours.  The 2nd test is a Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) test.  The GC/MS test can detect up to 17 different drugs.  This test can also help to rule out any false-positive results given by the ELISA test.  A GC/MS test sees the sample injected into a gas chromatograph which is designed to separate the various substances contained in the sample.  These substances are separated based on polarity and size.  Each separate component is then placed inside a mass selective detector which is used to look for any drug residues present.  The main principle of this test is to break apart substances and analyze them separately.

What Can A Hair Drug Test Detect Chart?

The above chart is from a company that is in the drug testing business.  It shows that with low doses of certain drugs, you have a chance of passing a hair drug test even without a detox. However, this is not the case with high use.  It shows that with weed, the amount found does not directly correlate to usage.  This is because different people will see their bodies get rid of weed metabolites at highly varied rates.  How often you smoke, your weight, height, and body’s metabolism can all influence this.

Hair follicle drug test detection times

The above chart shows the 90-day detection window for hair drug tests.  Many companies test for nicotine.  This can be because smokers have an increased likelihood of experiencing health issues which may drive up the company’s health-care expenses.

Comparison with Other Types of Drug Tests

While hair follicle tests are not as common as urine or saliva tests, they are accurate and have the longest detection time period out of the four types of drug tests, which is in comparison to urine, saliva, and blood tests.  Hair follicle tests are not as invasive as blood tests.

  • 90-day detection period
  • Accurate testing methods
  • Not as invasive as blood tests
  • Can detect a wide range of drugs
  • May even offer an estimate of when drugs were last consumed

  • Not as cheap as a low-cost urinalysis
  • Not as popular

How can you beat a hair follicle drug test?

There are two particularly popular approaches to beating a hair follicle drug test in the form of the Macujo method and the Jerry G method.  While it cannot be said for certain that most people who beat a hair drug test are actually doing so intentionally, many are and within the 90-day time period. We do not know for sure where these names came from but if you know, drop us a comment below.  So, how are they achieving this?

How to pass a hair drug test in 24 hours (1 day): Macujo Method

  • Disposable Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Liquid Tide Detergent Pack
  • Pink Clean and Clear’s acne wash
  • Shower Caps
  • Sink
  • Towel
  • Toxin Rid Shampoo with Aloe or another aloe-based shampoo, ideally a detox shampoo
  • Ultra Clean by Zydot Shampoo
  • Vinegar (regular grocery store stuff)
  • Warm water

You will notice that some of the ingredients listed are not safe to put in your hair.  If you’ve ever had an inflammatory reaction from putting any product or substances on your skin or scalp, you should not use this method.  If you have allergies or high levels of inflammation, you’re going to have a reaction to these products.  Further, if these products burn your scalp too much, you should abort the method.  Pain signals physical inflammation.  Either damage is happening if you experience pain or your immune system is causing the sensation to fight off a perceived threat.  We did not invent, nor are we recommending this or any other method, we are simply describing them as they are presently practiced and the anecdotal and/or scientific results.

The Macujo Method Instructions:

  1. First, employ the vinegar.  The original instructions would tell you to thoroughly rinse your hair. However, my intuition suggests you should avoid that since that way you’d be just adding an additional barrier on top of your hair oil.  Your goal is to remove the oil from your hair.  That way you’ll be able to reach the cuticle and break it open to wash out toxins.  Use straight vinegar barring the scenario that you have a sensitive scalp.  Work the vinegar all the way to the roots.  Remember, they will test the first inch and a half of your hair from the roots.  Don’t cut your hair or they might take the hair from your armpit.  It’s very unlikely that they’d take hair from the pubic area although it’s possible if the job were significant enough such as for the FBI.  You don’t want to put any of the ingredients listed above on your genital area, so avoid getting a haircut in the lead up to the test.
  2. Next, work the Clean and Clear into your hair, with the vinegar still in your hair.  Leave this in for half an hour with a shower cap on.  The purpose of this mixture is to break open hair cuticles and therefore access drug metabolites present in your hair.
  3. Then, rinse your hair fully. Get all of the products out of your hair.
  4. Wash your hair with Toxin Rid Aloe Shampoo.
  5. Those who use this method, insist that you have to use the old patented shampoo.  If you can’t find this product in particular, get another detox shampoo that contains aloe.  At the very least, the aloe will help to protect your head from scalp inflammation.  You can also use an extra Zydot Ultra Clean, scientifically proven to remove some drug metabolites from the hair.  [3]
  6. Repeat the shampoo and rinse.
  7. Next, use a couple of drops of Tide laundry detergent before washing your hair with it.  If you have problems with itchiness or if the idea really throws you off, you can skip this part although you do run the risk of the method failing as a result.  It’s up to each of us to decide what we are willing to risk.  You are of course risking the health of your hair and scalp if you choose to wash your hair with a Tide detergent.
  8. Lastly, just prior to the test, shampoo your hair with Zydot Ultra Clean.
  9. Use this method three times on the day before the test and once on the same day as the test.  This should mean the hair cuticle will break open and allow any drug residues to be washed out.

Does the Macujo method work?  As far as we know, there are not any scientific studies to back this method up but many users have reported that after using this method, they pass their test despite being regular drug users.  Further, many detox products and masking agents that were once seen as myths have since been proven scientifically to beat drug tests.  As a result, drug companies are always evolving and developing new ways to hold off any cheat methods.  If you happen to find a new effective and safe substance to add to mix, you may find something which works that will take scientists and testers several months and thousands of dollars to study and figure out how to detect or get a step ahead of it.  With the Macujo method, you are certainly running the risk of causing damage to your hair and scalp.  Wearing gloves and goggles are important to protect your hands and eyes from these chemicals.  Do not undertake this method unless something important such as your job is genuinely on the line.

How To Clear THC from Your Hair Over Ten days, Jerry G Method.

We will now discuss another popular hair detox method, the Jerry G method. Apparently, Jerry G is a real guy and Jerry G is the name he uses as a screen name for forums for drug tests.  If you’ve never bleached your hair before, proceed with this method with caution, follow every instruction to a T and most importantly, don’t do anything you wouldn’t do normally.  Once more, avoid this method if you have issues with inflammation or allergies.

  • Step 1: For the initial step, you have to stop smoking weed for at least 10 days.
  • Step 2: Next, you’re going to need to bleach your hair with a hair dye which has ammonia present. Do this on the day that you stop smoking.  The reason for this is in an effort to break open the hair cuticle and hopefully flush out its contents.  This will probably work.  Since bleach can alter the pigment in your hair, logically, it should be able to access the drug metabolites in your hair cuticles and flush them out or at least change their structure.  From this point, if you’ve dyed your hair previously and experienced no hair damage or burning sensations on your scalp, then you will hopefully come out none the worse after using this hair detox method.
  • Step 3: Next, you want to wash your hair out with an effective detox shampoo such as Toxin Wash. Some detoxers suggest that you have to buy a shampoo that contains Aloe such as Toxin Rid with Aloe.  This may or may not be accurate.  Do some research and see what you think of yourself.  Let us know any thoughts you have below.
  • Step 4: On the 10th day, bleach and dye your hair for a second time. Once more, use an aloe-based shampoo such as Toxin Rid with Aloe.  You can always substitute Ultra Clean anytime a detox shampoo is required.  It is cheap and proven.
  • Step 5: On the day of your test, you should add some baking soda paste to your head. Perhaps you haven’t ever undertaken this before but the use of baking soda is actually quite safe.  Leave it in your hair for about 15 minutes before washing it out.  This will neutralize the acids in your hair and may either neutralize or help to wash out any drug toxins.  Shampoo once more with your Aloe-based detox shampoo.
  • Step 6: Finally, shampoo your head with Ultra Clean Shampoo by Zydot.

This method does have pretty good theoretical underpinning when it comes to breaking open the hair cuticle and flushing out any toxins present.  This method does get into your hair.  If it didn’t, it couldn’t alter the pigment.  If you’ve dyed your hair before and did not go into anaphylaxis after the use of hair dye, then you can be pretty confident that this method is safe for you.  You should ensure that you check all the ingredients in each of the products used in case you have an allergy to any of the ingredients.  This method is probably the safer option of the two methods we’ve discussed.  Dye your hair twice then wash it with a detox shampoo.  Sounds pretty safe to me.

DIY Home Detox Remedies

While bleaching your hair just before the test seems like a logical way to beat a hair follicle test, if your head hair looks bleached, it’s possible that the test admins may take hair from your armpit or even genital area.  If you choose to bleach your hair, be sure to use bleach and color.  The bleach can oxidize the melanin found in your hair before the hair color adds your original hair color back.  This way, the hair will not appear bleached.  Further, the bleach and color approach may also conceal any remaining drug metabolites.

This approach has actually been scientifically studied.  There was a study published in the International Journal of Legal Medicine (Jurado, Kintz, Menéndez, & Repetto, 1997) which compared untreated hair to hair that had been bleached and dyed.  The primary focus of the study was that of 2 different types of cosmetic treatment (bleaching and dyeing).  Bleaching hair involves the treatment of some hair locks with the bleaching agent.  The goal of this was to lighten hair color whilst other locks remain untreated and held on to their natural color.  When it comes to hair dyeing, this involves the cosmetic treatment of all hair strands with the use of a coloring formula.  When it comes to bleached samples, the only requirement was that a drug user was the test subject but with dyed samples, it was also required that a hair shaft segment be left untreated.  While the length of said segments was different for each case, with each test subject, the contrast between untreated and treated hair was clear.  Ten female drug users had their hair samples tested for the hash, opiates, and cocaine.  Five of the test subjects (nr. 1-5) had their hair treated by bleaching while the other five subjects (nr. 6-10) had their hair dyed.  Some of those tested were multi-drug users as result opiates were looked at in six cases (four dyed hair samples, nr. 6-9 and two bleached, nr. 3 and 5).  Cannabis was tested for in four cases (three dyeing samples, nr. 6, 8, and 9 one from bleaching, nr. 4).  Nicotine was also researched in eight hair samples (nr. 11 – 18) which was offered by donors from France who each reported tobacco use but not other drug use.  They had their hair treated with bleaching.  All subjects who featured in this study were living and each of them had their hair treated prior to the sample being collected.

RESULTS:   In every single case, the researchers found that detectable drug residues had declined in comparison to those with untreated hair.  They also discovered that the decreased levels of detectability for drug metabolites were correlated with the amounts of damage caused to the hair.  So, if you want to effectively detox your hair before a drug test, expect to cause damage.  Of course, you want to ensure that the damage is not to the extent that it’s obvious you were attempting to beat the test.  The secret to beating a hair follicle test appears to be to damage your hair.  So again, efforts to beat a hair drug test won’t be for everyone.

Researchers found that the following drug residues declined by 40 to 60%:

  • Cocaine
  • Codeine
  • 6-diacetylmorphine
  • Benzoylecgonine

This is certainly enough for a lot of people to pass a hair test, so you could use the approach of bleach and dye rather than overly damaging methods (to your hair) which you may consider unless you’re desperate and in need of something fast.  The researchers found that morphine detectability reduced by more than 60%.  If you are a morphine addict, seek the right help to overcome your addiction.  For THC, the reduction was just 30%.  So obviously the case with THC and any drug metabolites for that matter is that you’re going to want to abstain from them for as long as possible before the test as the first step before undertaking any hair detox regimen.  A higher percentage of THC remained than THC-COOH which is then metabolized version of THC.  The researchers examined the samples thoroughly and confirmed that it wasn’t the choice of method (bleaching or dying) that mattered.  It was simply the level of damage inflicted upon the hair.  If you want success, you probably won’t be able to avoid causing damage to your hair.

The Do’s And Don’ts of hair detox

Cause Appropriate Damage to Your Hair: Do

Unfortunately, you’re going to need to do some damage to your hair if you want the pre-test detox to work.  It appears that this is the secret to success when it comes to beating a hair follicle drug test.

Smoke Before the Test: Don’t

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t smoke before the test.  You need to abstain from drugs for as long as possible prior to the test.

Shaving: Don’t

Avoid shaving your head.  It may seem intuitive that this approach can work but if you do, they’ll just take hair from your armpits or pubes.  If that’s not an option, they’ll give you a urine or blood test or in the worst case, you could be disqualified right off hand.  If they knew you had hair prior to arriving at the test, this will raise suspicions.  So, avoid shaving.  It’s not a good approach.

Tricks That Won’t Help You Pass a Hair Follicle Drug Test

There are many tricks promoted online and through social media as well as forums when it comes to beating a hair follicle test.  The first and obvious trick that won’t work is using a wig.  Someone’s going to spot the signs of a wig, especially if it’s not a good one.  Even if it is a good one, either the testers or someone else may notice that it’s not your natural hair, one way or another.  Another trick that probably won’t have much of a chance of working is the use of pills.  After all, what are detox pills going to do to anything inside the cuticles of your hair?  You need to get to the cuticles themselves, break them open and flush out drug residues, and pills won’t cut it.  They may help with passing other tests like a urinalysis but not a hair follicle test.

Q: How long does marijuana stay in your hair follicles?
A: Marijuana will likely stay in your hair follicles for about 90 days but possibly more.

Q: Will cutting my hair work for passing a hair strand test for pot?
A: No.  They’ll just take hair from elsewhere if you do or maybe ask you to take another type of test.  At worse, they may even disqualify you outright.

Q: Will I give a clean sample by washing my hair once with Zydot Ultra Clean?
A:  No, according to studies, you need to wash your hair with it multiple times to pass a drug screening, or use it with the Jerry G, or Macujo method, or even perming the hair.

Q: Is it possible that hair cleansing products will work without a detoxifying method like Jerry G for beating the drug screen?
A: Yes, it’s possible.  Ultimately, you need to cause a certain amount of damage to your hair in order to succeed in beating a hair test.

Best hair follicle drug testing shampoos: Pros and Cons

Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid Shampoo

It’s one of the most effective detox shampoos out there.  This product has tons of positive reviews online from users who successfully beat their hair follicle drug test.  It’s not as costly as it seems if your goal is to get or save a job.  With Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid Shampoo, you might get Zydot Ultra Clean for free with it, if you purchase from the right place.  Check several vendor deals like  So you cover most of your expenses for the Macujo or Jerry G method with these purchases.

Our Choice: Best detox shampoo to pass a hair follicle drug test:  Ultra Clean by Zydot

Zydot Ultra Clean shampoo is referenced in the methods we mentioned prior.  This shampoo is very popular and it’s our choice for the best detox shampoo on the market.  You could get this for less than $40.  It is most likely though that you won’t find either shampoo to be particularly special.  All you need to do is purchase something that can remove the oils and residues from your hair.  Obviously, people don’t usually buy shampoos to damage their hair, but the reality is, the damage is what you’ve got to do in order to beat the test.  Zydot is our choice because it has been studied scientifically and proven to remove drug residues from the hair.  You need to use it several times, at least 3 times, if we assume it will remove the same around 30 % each time, equaling 90%.  This is a very rough calculation but will give you a better chance than a single wash.

You need damaged but intact hair.  You want to minimize any signs of tampering, so ensure that you avoid a hair dye that is clearly not your natural hair color.

Can you beat a hair drug test?  According to science, yes you can.  Social media also says you can.  We’re going to say that the answer is yes.  There’s always a catch though.  In this case, the catch is that you’ve got to damage your hair.  By the sample principle, you need to have to crack some hair cuticles open to get the drug metabolites out.  The best way to succeed for people who’ve dyed hair is to dye it more than once, maybe even two times.

You need to bleach and dye it, it’s possible that both will work better than just one approach on their own.  The study referenced earlier showed up to above a 60% reduction in morphine, an example of a drug metabolite.  That’s incredible results and that is more effective than what a detox shampoo will offer on its own.  It is the damage that counts.  The secret to beating a hair follicle test is causing damage to your hair.  How much damage you’re willing to cause is up to you.  Don’t forget, in some regions including several U.S. states, it’s illegal to detox in an effort to beat a drug test.  So be sure to do your research before.  You’ll also need to research the ingredients of any products you’re planning on using for your detox to ensure that you won’t have an allergic reaction.  Be cautious, take these things seriously, and ensure you do things right.  Despite the damage you’ll cause, if you choose to go ahead with any of the methods or approaches we’ve discussed in this article, you still want to be sure your hair will stay intact and won’t become damaged to the point that it will raise suspicions among the tests.  You also, of course, want to avoid risking any permanent damage.  Your hair grows at a rate of roughly 1.5 inches every 3 months.  Test companies can’t test more than an inch and a half of hair because that will be looking at drug history longer than 90 days ago.  In that sense, the law is your friend.  So, if you want to beat a hair test, go ahead and bleach, dye, shampoo and you’re good. Best of luck!
